FOOD

How to feed a growing world population is one of the biggest challenges facing the world today. This is not only a question of improvements in agriculture but also in processing, distribution and storage. Chemistry plays an indispensable role in fostering innovations and practices which can help to grant universal access to food, such as increasing agricultural productivity, helping food production systems to become more resilient to extreme climate conditions or preventing food spoilage.

The scope of the Food theme at the World Chemical Summit is the ways in which the chemical industry can provide solutions and should develop to help to:

Improve the productivity
of agriculture

Reduce food waste and spoiling

Improve security and efficiency
in the food value chain

At the World Chemical Summit, a panel of industry leaders, policy makers and other stakeholders will aid understanding of how chemistry can help feed a growing world population sustainably and affordably, as well as discussing what role chemistry can and should play in helping to provide solutions to the two main challenges to feeding the world: climate change and population growth. The panel will also consider how chemistry can continue to improve the efficiency of food production, how to improve the lifespan of food without damaging health and how the chemical industry and the food industry can convince society that chemistry and natural trends are not incompatible. Far-reaching topics such as what the world will be eating in 50 years' time will also be on the stage.
