International representatives from various industrial sectors at an unprecedented event

On 4 and 5 October, Fira de Barcelona will bring together international representatives from various sectors to pose a series of questions about the role to be played by chemistry in meeting the challenges facing society in the 21st century in the first edition of the World Chemical Summit, an unprecedented event that aims to highlight the contribution of chemistry to current social development.

Fira de Barcelona has proposed the organisation of a completely new event on the international calendar to highlight the chemical sector's contributions to social progress and the questions that must be answered to help solve present and future challenges. Thus, the World Chemical Summit is defined as the forum for global debate for the chemical industry and adjacent industries' entire value chain, from applications to the final consumer.

Over two days, around 40 speakers will take part in the Inspirational Talks and debates that will address six issues that are key to the welfare of our society, and which are the core areas upon which the content of the World Chemical Summit is focused: Energy, Water and Air, Food, Health, Resource Efficiency and Digital Society. The World Chemical Summit has a strong social aspect, as it will promote activities that chemistry affects prominently in society and award prizes for the best innovation initiatives.

The World Chemical Summit has aroused the interest of major institutions, organisations and entities in the sectors concerned. In this sense, the event has the support of the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic), the European Association of Chemical Distributors (FECC) and some of the main industry associations of Latin America. The World Chemical Summit has also established an advisory board, the International Advisory Board (IAB), consisting of representatives from the global chemical industry, to collaborate on defining the content. The president of the IAB is Josep Maria Gascón, Director of Strategy and Competitive Intelligence of the Catalonia Regional Government's ACCIÓ agency, who has extensive experience in the chemical sector.

Gascón considers that ‘the World Chemical Summit will become the leading global platform for the applied chemical industry' and stresses that ‘there is no event in the world that combines the inspirational thoughts of experts with direct links to the industrial fabric to see how chemistry provides answers to the problems posed in today's society'.

The World Chemical Summit will be held jointly and simultaneously alongside Expoquimia, Eurosurfas, Equiplast, In(3D)ustry From Needs to Solutions, IoT Solutions World Congress and the World Congress of Chemical Engineering, shaping the first edition of Barcelona Industry Week.
