Experts and leading executives will reveal how chemicals can help to resolve society's challenges

The birth of the definitive global platform for the chemical industry: the World Chemical Summit

What solutions does today's chemical industry offer for the challenges facing 21st century society? How can it help us to deal with energy and food crises? How can the digital society help to put an end to certain diseases? These and other questions will be tackled by leading experts and international executives from various user sectors at the first World Chemical Summit organised by Fira de Barcelona, which takes place on 4 and 5 October in Hall 2 of the Gran Via exhibition centre.

This first edition of the World Chemical Summit, a brand new event on the trade fair calendar, aims to reveal the solutions offered by today's chemical industry to cross-cutting issues that affect society as a whole, such as Energy, Water and Air, Food, Health, Resource Efficiency and the Digital Society, the six key themes around which this new international summit will revolve.

The initiative, which was presented in June to the European Parliament, enjoys the support of the leading global and sector institutions such as the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) the European Association of Chemical Distributors (FECC) and some of the leading associations in Latin America, as well as the ICCA (International Council of Chemical Associations) and the ACC (American Chemistry Council).

Some of the speakers who have already confirmed their attendance include the chief executive of Clariant International and president of CEFIC, German Hariolf Kottmann; the vice-president of Scientific Development at Total, Frenchman Philippe Baptiste; the Dutch government advisor on energy matters, Michiel Stork; the well-known Danish expert in biotechnology, Per Falholt; Swedish doctor Nina Rawal, recently named one of the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders in the field of health; and Russian physicist Tatiana Budtova, an expert in polymer-based biomasses.

These are just some of the over 40 experts taking part in the inspirational debates at the World Chemical Summit, with the aim of conveying their thoughts and experiences to an audience of leading global representatives of the user industries of applied chemicals as a driving force for transformation and social progress. The organisation of the World Chemical Summit benefits from the support of an International Advisory Board (IAB) whose president, Josep-Maria Gascón, contends that 'the World Chemical Summit aspires to become the global benchmark for the applied chemicals industry, where pioneering solutions for the future challenges facing our society will be discussed.'

The World Chemical Summit, Equiplast, Expoquimia and Eurosurfas are held jointly and simultaneously with the IN(3D)USTRY From Needs to Solutions trade show, the IoT Solutions World Congress and the tenth World Congress of Chemical Engineering, giving rise to the first edition of Barcelona Industry Week, organised by Fira de Barcelona.
